Cerebral Palsy

Geoquanya
&
Andrew

Andrew, who lives in Nassau in the Bahamas, has had Cerebral Palsy since birth. His mother, Betty needed a C-section and he suffered from oxygen deprivation during delivery. As a toddler he couldn’t sit or crawl, his vision was impaired and he could only eat soft foods. Doctors in Cuba as well as the Bahamas could only recommend large doses of medication and even with that held out little hope that Andrew’s condition would improve significantly.

A determined Betty searched the Internet looking for “anything to help”, found the Ocean Hyperbaric website, and learned about pressurized oxygen and its healing effects. She decided on treatments for Andrew and she’s glad she did. Together they have made 2 trips to our center in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Andrew has now had 70 treatments. His results have been astounding. Andrew is now very active. Getting him to sit still for this picture was very difficult, but a joy to behold. Not only can he crawl, he can walk while holding his mother’s helpful hand. His coordination and motor skills have improved immensely and while he cannot yet speak intelligently he does makes

sounds and tries to communicate.

Betty advises parents like herself to “find something that will work. If there is something that may help your child – try it. You won’t know unless you do. And most importantly don’t forget to pray.”

Betty’s friend, Sonia Black also had trouble with the birth of her child, Geoquanya. “GG” as she is affectionately called, had to be removed by forceps from the birth canal. Not only was she deprived of oxygen during delivery; her head was slightly crushed by the forceps that were used. Twenty-five months later an earlier diagnosis was confirmed. “GG” had cerebral palsy. Seeing Andrew’s successful progress gave Sonia the impetus to bring GG to Ocean Hyperbaric for treatment. The two friends made the trip to South Florida together and shared the progress that their children were making with HBOT. After only 40 treatments, Sonia has noticed significant improvement in her child. A finicky eater, GG now eats with gusto. She walks well and no longer falls

down. Her vocabulary has improved significantly so much so that she carries on quite a conversation. Sonia, who doesn’t believe in medicine “unless it’s the last resort”, found oxygen to be the perfect solution for GG.

Both mothers believe that if hyperbaric chambers had been available at the hospitals where GG and Andrew were born, the effects of the oxygen deprivation would not have been so drastic. Together they have started “Eyes Wide Open” a support group in the Bahamas dedicated to placing hyperbaric oxygen chambers in close proximity to hospital delivery rooms.
